Indeed, the stylish rear-view mirrors of the TWIKE 5 will be positioned not on the wall, but on the upper A-pillar.
Since the vehicle body, especially in the upper area, tapers sharply backwards for aerodynamic reasons, the now secured position enables an optimal rear view far behind the vehicle. The mirror glasses are specially modified for the TWIKE 5 and have an aerodynamically optimized housing. The complete volume of the mirror housing lies within the width of the vehicle, which makes folding up in narrow parking spaces unnecessary.
If the shape and position now appear very harmonious and leaves almost no questions unanswered, the way to determine the glasses and the associated approval process was more complex than initially assumed. For the EU approval class L5e (three-wheeled motor vehicles), stricter approval conditions have been in force since 2016 and the simple installation of conventional motorcycle mirrors on a closed tricycle has no longer been possible. While it was still possible to select a motorcycle mirror according to ECE R81 from the catalog and to confirm the windows at the EU approval of the TWIKE 3,, the ECE R46 for passenger car rear view mirrors have to be fulfilled according to newer specifications.. The set of rules for car rearview mirrors is much more extensive and the mirrors themselves must be homologated in accordance with this ECE.
However, the work of developing our own mirror has paid off, and thus all requirements for viewing angle, operability, lightweight construction and aerodynamics could be optimally fulfilled. The rearview mirror housings are also extremely relevant to the development process because, on the one hand, they have to meet the strict approval requirements, and on the other hand, their shape and position have an extreme influence on the overall aerodynamics of the vehicle.
Since the mirrors are now legally secured and determined, the aerodynamic optimizations can be carried out again.
