Electrive.net: Vitesco supplies e-drive for TWIKE 5

Vitesco Technologies is using its EMR3 electric axle drive outside the passenger car sector for the first time. In the TWIKE 5, the EMR3 (Electronics Motor Reducer) will deliver 70 kW and will therefore be able to accelerate to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and reach speeds of up to 190 km/h according to the current state of development. On the other hand, WLTP consumption of just 6.9 kWh/100 km and a range of more than 400 kilometers are expected.

Vitesco Technologies is using its EMR3 electric axle drive outside the passenger car sector for the first time: The system, which has been in series production since 2019 and has already been selected for over 20 vehicle models from European and Asian manufacturers, will power the TWIKE 5.

In the Twike 5, the EMR3 (Electronics Motor Reducer) will deliver 70 kW. The Vitesco press release also states that the three-wheeled high-performance vehicle can accelerate to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds (according to the current state of development) and should reach speeds of up to 190 km/h. However, this performance is only a side effect of the design, which is based on aerodynamics and lightweight construction: on the other hand, WLTP consumption of just 6.9 kWh/100 km and a range of more than 400 kilometers are expected. Twike itself states a range of between 150 and 500 kilometers, depending on the battery variant.

However, it will be some time before the TWIKE 5 is actually built. According to Vitesco, the small series is set to start in mid-2022. As reported, the start of production already had to be postponed last year.

” The use of the EMR3 in the TWIKE 5 shows how diverse the application possibilities are,” says Hilko Hakvoort, Head of the High Voltage Drives product line at Vitesco Technologies. ” With its minimal installation space requirements , low weight and the driving pleasure it enables, it is tailor-made for this small, lightweight high-performance vehicle.”

The EMR3 combines the power electronics, a permanent magnet synchronous motor and a reduction gearbox in one unit – hence the name Electronics Motor Reducer. The electric drive can deliver up to 150 kW and 2,900 Nm of torque. The third EMR generation weighs just 76 kilograms and its dimensions (40x35x55 cm) are barely larger than an on-board case.

“In addition to performance, efficiency was also of key importance to us,” says Martin Moescheid, Managing Director and shareholder of Twike GmbH. “The EMR3 is highly efficient in all load ranges, enabling us to achieve very low consumption values. In addition, this drive unit is particularly light, extremely robust and easy to adapt.”

In the TWIKE 5, which still has pedals in keeping with its origins as a covered recumbent bike, the pedal power is used to generate electrical energy – to increase the range and reduce the load on the battery. In the TWIKE 3, the pedals were still mechanically connected to the drive shaft.
