One reason for the delay is the fact that instead of the 200 orders originally envisaged for the TWIKE 5, which is limited to a series of 500, there were at some point over 800 reservations. “The last customer would have had to wait around three years for the five hundredth vehicle to leave the factory.This is because production capacity was originally limited to one vehicle per day,” said a company spokesperson. In order to meet the noticeably higher demand as quickly as possible and, on the other hand, to place investments carefully, the company contacted an experienced contract manufacturer and presented the project to them. Initial data was exchanged, workshops were held and further planning was driven forward.
“We are currently coordinating with the contract manufacturer (and will continue to do so from now until the start of series production). As they will also manufacture the body shell (the aluminum space frame), they need all the adjacent boundary conditions and these must be fixed at defined points in time and must not change (significantly) afterwards. The overall goal is to start series production in late fall of this year.” – Spokeswoman for TWIKE.
The company states that, at first glance, the fact that production will start later than originally planned and promised has a negative impact. “On the other hand, however, the now more intensive preparation time will result in a higher cycle rate and, above all, even greater process reliability,” says the company. Initial information on the TWIKE 6 has also already been released. “The development of the TWIKE 6 is therefore already beginning with the improvement of the TWIKE 5. Essentially, it will be derived from the TWIKE 5 with the aim of significantly reducing costs and not sacrificing riding enjoyment despite lower mileage,” the company told us by email.
