A prerequisite for this was ensuring the ergonomics of seat adjustment, steering lever movement, and accessibility of all operating functions required while driving.
Especially in the dashboard area, the challenge was to cover the supporting structures both under and behind the visible surfaces, and to effectively utilize them for attaching the trim and controls. Besides the load paths of the vehicle frame structure, the distribution of fresh and warm air to the designated vents required the most complex installation space, as this continuous air volume should ideally remain undisturbed in cross-section. Air, purified by an activated carbon filter, will flow into the interior centrally at the base of the windshield, through two adjustable flap nozzles in the footwell, and through similarly adjustable vents on each side of the dashboard.
With the final adjustment of the upper diagonal struts, we have centrally aligned the touch-enabled main display towards the pilot. For attaching your own ‘bring-in devices’ (GPS, smartphone, tablet), we have positioned robust and intentionally visible tubular structures. At the front end of the roof console, which integrates the rain sensor and provides a control panel for opening the hoods and side windows, there is a 12V connection for devices such as a dashcam.
The challenge in the overall design lay in the extreme compactness of the space while simultaneously accounting for all envelopes (space required by moving components or bodies) during operation (foot, leg, and arm movements). Every cubic centimeter must be utilized efficiently here – efficiency is the guiding principle of the TWIKE 5, and this applies down to the smallest detail. Therefore, the securing of all structural components beneath the surface had to be finalized first. In addition to the glass surfaces and intentionally understated yet elegant anodized aluminum, fine-mesh carbon and Alcantara are intended to support the controls and partially cover the underlying structures.
