Greenhouse gases cause immense damage to the climate and nature. For this reason, companies are legally bound to maximum emission values and fines are payable if these are exceeded. By purchasing environmental certificates (saved CO2), companies are allowed to increase their emission values and thus create a balance.
As greenhouse gases can be saved by using electric cars, it has been possible to have the CO2 savings certified by the Environment Agency since 2022. This can then be sold to companies subject to quotas. For private individuals, there are intermediaries who support this process and broker the quota shares in packages to the companies.
As a rule, only the current vehicle registration certificate (registration certificate part I) has to be uploaded to the respective portal, which is why it is important at this point that your own name can be found in it.
The payout premium varies between the different providers and depends on the vehicle class – so a comparison is definitely worthwhile. Pages such as efahrer.chip.de – GHG rate or elektroauto-news.net – GHG rate provide a compact comparison of the various portals. Currently (as of February 2022), the GHG quota is between 200 and 350 euros.
It should be noted that, under certain circumstances, the payment of the GHG quota may be subject to tax if the exemption limit is exceeded (Section 22 (3) of the Income Tax Act).
