The TWIKE is moving—specifically, from CATIA to Onshape. Both are powerful CAD programs, and at the time it was the right decision to begin the development process of the TWIKE 5 using CATIA. For all development partners involved, this CAD software—well established in the automotive industry—was the standard. The smooth exchange of data with all partners continues to confirm that decision to this day.
Now, the development of the TWIKE 5 is approaching the finish line. For the procurement process and later parts management, other aspects will become more important—such as easy access and seamless data connectivity. That is why we are now switching to the cloud-based Onshape as our new CAD platform.
The main advantage of Onshape compared to traditional systems like CATIA lies in its cloud-based architecture. This allows us to collaborate with our partners in real time, regardless of the hardware being used. Since all computations take place in the cloud, no high-end workstation is required. Onshape runs on Windows as well as on other operating systems such as macOS, Linux, or even within the web browser of a Raspberry Pi.
We are particularly impressed by the fact that all previous CAD data—even those created in systems such as PTC Creo or Autodesk Inventor—can be imported in their original format and, if needed, edited again in their native programs. Among many other advantages, we found this feature especially compelling in choosing Onshape as our new CAD foundation.
